Service, by its very nature, is about finding the best in ourselves and in each other. Everyone’s effort is important. Service, when we do it well is about growth and win-win.

PARADE Magazine and The LEAGUE (a national youth service-learning organization which empowers young people to make a positive difference in their communities) are seeking nominations for a new form of award, The All America High School Service Team, to recognize students who have made exemplary contributions in the service areas of: health, education, environment, economics or community. These students show service as a solution to solve community problems and the power of stories to inspire others to action.
All nominees will receive our thanks, those who are selected as final recipients will be invited to receive an award and accept the challenge of a task: developing their own ideas as a national group for promoting service and service-learning in schools nationwide. Winners will be asked to share their stories, and help reach out to other youth towards finding the best in each of us.
Service Team Awards
1st Team
One awardee from each category of service (health, education, environment, economics, and community) and a parent or legal guardian will receive a two-day trip to Washington, D.C. to receive an award and special recognition.
2nd Team
One awardee from each category of service (health, education, environment, economics, and community) and a parent or legal guardian will receive a two-day trip to Washington, D.C. to receive an award and special recognition.
3rd Team
One awardee from each category of service (health, education, environment, economics, and community) and a parent or legal guardian will receive a two-day trip to Washington, D.C. to receive an award and special recognition.
Each Nominee Must:
• Be currently enrolled in a public, private, charter, home school or high school in the U.S.
• Be a US citizen or permanent resident of the US;
Notwithstanding the above, none of the following will be eligible to enter the contest: (1) members of the Board of Directors of The LEAGUE or their children; (2) The LEAGUE or PARADE magazine employees or their children; (3) The LEAGUE National Commission members or their children; (4) members of the Selection Committee or their children.
Judging:
All submissions will be judged via a two-tiered judging process:
• A group of 1st Tier Judges from the service, education, non-profit, media and corporate sectors will narrow down the submissions to a concentrated group of finalists.
• A blue ribbon panel of judges consisting of humanitarians, celebrities and professionals in different fields will choose the top 15 All America Team awardees, 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each of the 5 categories.
Award Nomination Criteria:
• Students must be involved in dynamic community service projects. Dynamic projects are defined as projects where the student has led and involved others in service in the area of health, education, environment, economics, or community, and which has had a measurable impact.
• Service as a solution. Students will demonstrate that service helped solve a community problem or problems.
• The power of stories. The power of the story of the student’s work inspired others to action.
• Nominees will be judged on the completion of the following 1) Nomination Form 2) Nominee Recommendation Form 3) Support Materials 4) Acknowledgement of Terms of Award.
• By submitting an application, the nominee and nominator agree to grant The LEAGUE and PARADE a non-exclusive license to publish any work submitted and the use of the nominee’s image or personal photo for promotional purposes.
• Recipients may be publicized in local and national media outlets.
• Nominations will be accepted electronically (online) only through PARADE.COM
• Student must be a current United States High School student in good standing for the 2009-2010 school year. Good standing is defined as meeting the requirements of their school inclusive but not limited to any active detentions, suspensions, or disciplinary action at school.
• Student must be involved in service to his or her community which has had a measurable impact.
• Nominees can be nominated by parents, friends, teachers, peers, school administrators, or themselves.
• All nominations will be reviewed by the Selection Committee in meeting the award nomination criteria.
• One awardee per category of service will be selected for the 1st Team. And two additional awardees per category of service area (health, education, environment, economics, and community) will be selected for the 2nd and 3rd Teams. A total of 15 Winners.
• Nominations are to be submitted electronically ONLY.
• Deadline for submissions is April 16, 2010 (12 Midnight EST)
• Decision of the judges is final.
• When the awards are announced, so too will the names of the Selection Committee First Tier and Blue Ribbon Panel judges.
• Awardees will be notified by phone, email, promotion on www.theleague.org on or before May 24, 2010.
• All Service Team awardee’s eligibility is contingent upon availability for in person recognition and you must be available to travel to and attend the ceremony and events in Washington, D.C. on June 9, 2010.
